The US embargo on Iran on September 29, 2010 included the prohibition of the import of Persian rugs to America.
This latest development illustrates just how little thought or long-term planning goes in to making delicate political
decisions effecting millions of innocent civilians.

The majority of Iran's income comes from their oil exports; around $700m per year is brought in from Persian carpets
(around 1% of the overall national income) yet around 10% of population is supported by the weaving industry. While
leaders and high-ranking government officials are made rich by the country's natural resources carpet weaving
puts food on many of the civilian populations' tables.

Banning the import of Persian rugs is a political manoeuvre which is likely to hurt the innocent population of Iran as
well as rug dealers in the US and abroad. It will have little effect on the wealthy officials who have the decision
making power and will do nothing for international relations.

A new approach is needed to solve the problems in the Middle East.

In the meantime this ban will make it more expensive for home-owners in America to furnish their homes with
knotted rugs. Although countries such as Afghanistan, India, Turkey and China will benefit as a result of Iran's loss
the price of the end product is likely to rise - such is the way of supply and demand.

Many businesses could face massive strain or worse. PayPal have already started to ban traders selling Persian
products so those trading on eBay will have to change their business model or face extinction. There are questions
as to whether rugs already located in different countries around the world could be sent to the US - stockpiles of
Persian rugs in the UK could potentially be shipped to America without benefiting Iran as they have already been
sold, but even moves such as this could be blocked in the current climate.

To gain influence in a delicate region you must have the people on your side, anything else and you are fighting a
losing battle. The people of Iran are not happy with the present government but to many it could be a case of better
the devil you know. Prolonging their suffering will only damage relations further.

It was Winston Churchill who said: "All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes." America
should take heed.
